History of the IFBA

On the farm

In the early days of the 1960s and 70s the Irish Fur Breeders were members of the British Fur Breeders Association we were known as area six. In the early 1980s the Irish formed their own association which is known as the Irish Fur Breeders Association.

There are now  6 member farms producing approximately 150,000 mink pelts and 2,000 fox pelts, providing valuble employment in rural areas.

Mr. William Macdougald, MRCVS, and wife Billie, farmed mink in Dublin where Dundrum shopping centre now stands.
In 1965 they moved the farm to Ballymanus House in County Laois.
At the height of the mink farms prosperity it produced 80,000 mink and 20,000 foxes and employed 70 people
